Health & Safety

As a market leader in painting and aftercare maintenance, health and safety comes first when planning and carrying out our work.

Caring for Our People and Your Property

Health and safety isn't a checkbox for us; it’s simply part of the Carus way. We think ahead, incorporating safety into how we plan, set up, and execute every painting and maintenance project. From operating in high-traffic commercial environments to managing complex safety protocols at height, we are committed to minimizing downtime without ever compromising on well-being. We treat your property and our people with the utmost respect, because for us, a project is only genuinely successful when every person leaves the site as safely as they arrived.

Our health and safety commitment to customers

  • Continually maintaining and developing safety systems and procedures.
  • Our people carry applicable training certificates and qualifications.
  • Our people are police checked and we operate a random drug and alcohol policy.
  • Staff using elevated work platforms and/or rope and harness are trained and hold the relevant NZQA unit standards.
  • Every worksite has a current first aid certified staff member.
  • Comprehensive site specific safety plan provided for every worksite.

Our Health and Safety Policy

We have worked extensively with Leigh Tobeck, Health & Safety Systems Ltd, to develop our strategy to manage health and safety risk and hazards in all areas of our business. Our policy is to conduct our business at all times without risk to our workers.

We commit to:

Providing each worker with a safe and healthy workplace.

Taking all practicable steps to prevent accidents and incidents and protect workers, members of the public and contractors from risk, and promoting the health and well-being of workers.

Establishing and insisting upon safe methods and safe practices at all times.

Complying with all legislative requirements, codes of practice and safe operating procedures relevant to our workplace.

Ensuring any accident or incident is accurately reported and recorded.

Every worker is expected to share in the commitment to this policy. We encourage all workers to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others while at work and to actively involve themselves in our health and safety process.

Working at Heights

Our health and safety focus includes operating at height and in hard-to-reach places. Whether it’s abseiling, elevated work platforms (EWPs), scaffolding, or specialised access systems, our team has the experience and safety protocols to work confidently in challenging environments.

Carus Group's sister company, Monkeytoe, is New Zealand’s leading height safety and fall arrest company. This means we have specialist height safety expertise and systems in-house to paint your building safely and efficiently, no matter how tricky the access.

Lead Paint & Asbestos Management

When lead-based paint or asbestos-containing materials are identified, safety becomes the priority. Our team follows strict health and safety protocols to minimise risks, protect building occupants, and ensure work is completed responsibly. For lead-based paint, this may include chemical stripping methods, controlled waste collection, careful containment measures, and secure disposal procedures to minimise dust and contamination. Where asbestos-containing materials are present, preparation methods are carefully adapted to minimise disruption to fibres and reduce contamination risks. Using appropriate PPE, site-specific controls, and best-practice safety procedures, our team has the knowledge and experience to safely manage challenging environments while maintaining the highest health and safety standards.
